Artist Statement
I try to produce pieces of art that are mysterious, evocative, intuitive on one hand and colorful, exciting and explosive on the other. The most exciting part of painting to me is letting the creative process unfold. Starting with a vague idea and letting it take me where it must go. I am intrigued with experimentation and obsessed with the excitement of the creative process.

Joan Stewart, Crusades Crusade in Green and Yellow
“Crusade” was completed after a taking a course from Carrie Brown in collage techniques.  In the class we worked on 10” x 10” pieces of illustration board.  I found this small format rather stifling and could not wait to do larger works on canvas.  The papers are hand stained or painted and adhered to the canvas.  The colors formed from the various layers of transparent papers are exciting and beautiful.  It was also a study in scale.  What is fairly easy to do in a small space can be extremely difficult to pull off on a much larger canvas.
