Paul and Kate Studio
Ceramics

March 19 - April 26, 2013

Paul and Kate are artists who have been collaborating for 20 years and married for 10. They have been working in ceramics on and off now for twelve years and in the last five years have taken a more serious approach to their work- showing their work at galleries, art festivals, and creating an Etsy website. Most of their work tends to be based on nature and is influenced by their travels both here in the states and abroad. The techniques used are as primitive as their work looks- all are built using coils, slabs, or pinched. None of their work is thrown on the wheel. Their work is constantly changing- sometimes slowly when starting a new series or at times very quickly, perhaps by discovering a different approach to doing something or just a happy accident. Experimentation was the focus of much of Paul and Kate's older work when they would pit fire ceramics in their Richmond Virginia backyard- many times smoking up the entire neighborhood. This style of firing gave them the unique and surprising look they were after. Through the years Paul and Kate have begun to use conventional modern firing methods, but their quest for the unique and surprising continues.
