Artist’s Statement:
Thank you for attending the opening preview of my Swamp Exhibit in Williamsburg. One of the joys of being an artist is watching people look at your work; seeing them engage, examine, compare, and share the experience with each other. Monday was a real pleasure for me. To be surrounded by curious and interested people made the night very special. Having wonderful friends supporting me made the night very memorable. Thank you very much.

There seems to be so little time to spend with each person at an opening and I would enjoy having the opportunity to visit and answer questions about my work. I am in Studio 116, d’ART Center, 208 East Main Street in Downtown Norfok, VA. Please come. The best time to visit without an appointment is between 1:00 pm and 3:00 pm, Tuesday thru Thursday. Appointments can be made through FB or by email: hershberger@virtualpearl.net.

About the Swamp Paintings:
For several years, I have been working on a series of paintings based on swamps. These paintings are from photographs often taken from the side of the road – ranging from Virginia to South Carolina, but they are not photo-realistic. I rely on my years of painting experience -- from life, memory, imagination and photographs -- to enliven the paint with gestures and space. I am also trying to summon the tactile sense, the seeing that is done most with the hands. These paintings are not fresh and easy; they defy the ideas of simplicity and beauty. They are over worked and reworked and finally, hopefully, resurrected. Much like the swamps they depict, they are busy and alive and evolving. To me they are still growing and changing, only made static by the frame.
