All of my clay work is created using hand-building methods; no potter's wheel is used. Working with slabs, coils and modeled clay offers tremendous flexibility in shape and form. While hand-building is a much slower process, I enjoy the unlimited shapes and forms it offers.

I work with nature and the multitude of textures that are found in nature. From the small veins in leaves to the angles of crystals to stratified earth, the visual imagery nature offers us is astounding. Whether I am pressing actual plant material into the clay or carving angles or layering textures, all are inspired by what can be seen all around us.

Working with clay is very physical and thus therapeutic for me. Wedging clay to prepare it, rolling out the slabs, pressing coils and hand-sculpting flora and fauna all require physical effort so the mind/body connection must be made. When in my studio, the world recedes and the creative process becomes the focus.

I have found that working with clay is also humbling. No matter how experienced a potter may be, there will be failures. Pots will crack and glazes will do unexpected things for no apparent reason. Thus, potters learn to accept these losses and, consequently, rejoice in the successes.
