While painting is my work and day job, sculpture is how I relax and have fun. I like to capture the textures I see in nature in clay by rolling the leaves into clay and them manipulating there forms into usable pottery. I don't have a slap roller, so I use a large rolling pin and my body weigh to roll out large slabs on the floor of my studio. I think of it as clay pilates. When my sculptures became too large to fit in the Kiln, I turned to concrete. My largest leaf sculpture to date is 46 inches long and weighs 80 pounds, but I plan to go much larger. Also, I am intrigued with copper, wine corks, and wood. I have recently started chainsaw sculpture, so watch out for some totem pole to in the future. Some women like to show for shoes; I like to shop at the hardware store. Wire, copper fittings, copper pipes and new Dremel tool bits excite me.
When I teach clay sculpture and pottery, I tell my students, "It’s only a piece of dirt. If you mess it up, just start over again!"
