Gourd Art & Sculpture

Marcie Evans, Gourd Art & Sculpture
As an art student, painting and drawing were focused on more than three dimensional work. I found paper and canvas 'flat' and looking back I can now see my attempts to manipulate and add dimension to paintings and drawingsy by adding thick layers of paint or collage type embellishments. I wanted art that I could literally FEEL. Over the past several years I have worked with gourds and clay, then moved on to mixed metals and found materials. I find it more satisfying to form the shapes rather than sketch them although each piece is usually born from several drawings fused together. Most of my ideas are inspired by a shape, color or pattern, especially figures - the curve of a hip, the gentle sway of a back, the taper of a leg. Each completed piece contains the thoughts and emotions of the period of time spent working on it and reflects a progression of infusing old ideas with new.
