Susan & Ronald Salomon
Button Bay Fiber Arts

February 9 - March 26, 2010

Susan began knitting in childhood. In the 1960s she discovered the many variations on stitch patterns and sweater designs that were available to knitters and began to design her own patterns. As a greater variety of fibers became available to hand-knitters, she incorporated them into her designs.

Ronald developed an interest in weaving in adulthood and took classes at the Parsons School of Design and The American Museum of Natural History.

Initially, they worked separately, Susan concentrating on hand knit sweaters and Ronald on basketry and rugs.

In the 1990s Susan developed patterns for hats and baby sweaters and Ronald began concentrating on scarves and shawls to complement Susan’s work. This proved to be a successful direction for both of them. It also gave them the opportunity to collaborate and to experiment with color and texture. Susan also developed an interest in embellishment and decoration leading her to the use of beads, buttons, and tassels in combination with vivid color combinations.

Both Susan and Ronald are particularly interested in color and have found that by working together they have had enhanced opportunities to experiment with new color combinations. They have benefitted by a new freedom that has come into baby clothes in the past few years, which has allowed them to use with great success new combinations of colors not traditionally associated with baby clothes.

Despite their concentration on hats, scarves, and baby clothes Susan still knits adult sweaters in one-of-a kind patterns and color combinations, while Ronald has found the time to continue working on intricately patterned coiled baskets.
