Artist's Statement
My artwork attempts to inspire viewers to develop their self-abilities and concede to our incontestable connection with one another. To accomplish this feat, I deliberately bridge the gap between verbal and visual language. Rearranging visual syntax, using drawn words and symbols, and mixing media are methods I employ to achieve communication. I believe this approach allows me to use visual language in the manner we use verbal language: an interaction of tangible and abstract experiences.

I feel many of my thoughts and experiences are not limited to me as an individual. I feel my ideas, observations, and experiences are instead, familiar among many people. We are a reflection and a result of each other regardless of our differences. Our arts should explore, experience, then express life from our own viewpoints; creating until our experience has become our expression.

Biography
I am a 34-year-old visual artist from Norfolk, VA who primarily uses acrylic paints and mixed media. I spend much of my time teaching visual art for Norfolk Public Schools as well as writing, painting, and spending time with family and friends. Working for Norfolk Public Schools since 1994, I attempt to instill in my students an appreciation and development of the arts. Since my first exhibition in 1992, I've exhibited in numerous group shows and have had five solo exhibitions. I've published two books of poetry and written a children's book. I'm currently producing a multimedium art show coinciding with my latest book of poetry and CD, "Escape from Freedom". I plan to start The BirthMark Foundation in the near future where we use visual and multi-media art as a means to help children and parents develop self-awareness, self-directed edification and discover interpretations of life allowing them to explore and express their experiences through triumphant creations of art guiding their lives in productive directions.
