Judge’s Statement:
It was an honor for me to judge the 7th Annual Student Art Show for This Century Art Gallery. The Gallery is devoted to the development and recognition of young artists in the Williamsburg area and this show is a marvelous culmination of that effort. I was impressed by the remarkable talent and passion exhibited by these student artists and I am sure that all who view this show will walk away feeling a personal connection to many of these outstanding pieces. The selection of awards was difficult and reflects only my humble opinion. I encourage you to make your own selections as you view the work in the gallery tonight. I found that there were a number of standouts, work that clearly shows extraordinary talent and ability. I looked for pieces that not only show technical competence but that spoke to me and caused me to pause and to reflect on the work and on the artist who created it. I wanted to see the artist’s personal expression and willingness to go beyond an assignment: to see the work speaking with the artist’s own voice. I looked for work that comes from the heart.

Thank you for the opportunity to judge this extraordinary show.

Artist’s Statement / Biography:
Painting is a way for me to express my feelings about a particular subject. My subject matter will vary; landscape, figure, abstract and portrait; but my approach is usually the same: I like to work on a prepared surface that allows me to lift and manipulate color. I am fascinated by the magic of painting, the power of art to arouse the senses and inspire the viewer. I live and work from my home and studio in Yorktown, Virginia where I teach fine art classes for children and teens. I have been a juror for the PTA Reflections art competition for a number of years.
